I'm sure writing was on the wall along time ago. Iyanla had already said she wasn't coming back. That finale had all the makings of a total show wrap up (not just the season)... They may have held onto the finite possibility that the show would come back.. I got the impression that Iyanla was reassuring Niambi that she would be continuing her journey or discovery.
Things would have had to be underway quite a bit before the actual taping began.
I still don't think the show was cancelled in the traditional sense. B/M just dismissed it themselves. Usually when a show is cancelled, it is done so by traditional networks.. Since this show was syndicated, the producers had alot of options which they don't appear to have pursued any.
Even shows with a long run and when it's decided to end the run... don't consider themselves cancelled. Most of the great shows have had some sort of finale.. and obviously SO's was definitely much different and more comprehensive than any other season ending show. I thought it more symbolic of a show's closure.
I don't think Rhonda sat by the phone waiting for a call from B/M till the end of June... as I said I'm sure the writing was on the wall many many months ago. But legally the contract had to end before there was final closure.
In any case... Niambi was definitely not ready to graduate. She was essentially promised the trophy though... I would hope that they made arrangements for her to continue counseling. She sounds like she is doing well according to her blog.
It really is a shame that B/M has decided not to try to market the show to another network... after all the show was up several times for awards. I believe it never received the viewers or numbers it hoped for, unfortunately trashy entertainment is ruling their decision.
As for Niambi... my impression was that Iyanla did offer additional therapy outside of the SOH, and she seemed to reassure Niambi that she would continue their relationship. The trophy is a symbol, and my guess is that Dr. Stan and Iyanla will not abandon her, and she will one day receive her trophy.
