TV Writer's Strike 11 Months, 1 Week ago

So it's seems as though the writers have gone on strike! I wonder how this is really going to affect people. TV has completetly changed since the last time the writers went on strike. People just don't watch TV like they used to. I may be little disappointed that I won't be able to watch my soaps but for the most part I don't really care.
I have plenty of stuff recorded on my DVR that I still haven't watched and I also know that there is a ton of stuff on ON DEMAND that I haven't even touched yet. Then there's YouTube and iTunes too.
I really don't think I'm going to be missing most of the crap on TV either.

I saw on some show last night that some of the shows have enough material already written to last them a couple of months, espeically the Soaps. After that, what happens?
To tell you the truth, I have felt that Leno and Letterman's writers went downhill a few months ago. Some nights the material is really bad. LOL.
For some odd reason I have lost interest in some of my favorite programs. I used to love Grey's Anatomy, not now. I have no desire to watch it anymore. I thought I would like to watch its spinoff show, The Practice, but I can't get into it either.
I used to love Nip/Tuck, but not this year. I'll probably tune back in when Rosie's character returns. She is GREAT on that show.
Portia DeRossie, Ellen's partner, is scheduled to be on there tonight.
What I do find myself watching is Dancing With the Stars, Biggest Loser, Jon and Kate plus 8, Without A Trace, Cold Case. I guess my taste have changed.

I'm not into much of the major network tv shows.. Never have been.
My main 2 favorites are The Biggest Loser and Ugly Betty.. The second is a quirky comedy with underlying theme.. I do also really enjoy Extreme Home Makeover on Sunday nights.
If it's any other night..I more often than not look at what's on Hallmark, TLC or Discovery Health. Or see if a good older movie is on.
There is way too much garbage on in my humble opinion. Maybe it's my age!
I saw something last week saying that there are forty some odd movies slated to be released in theatres in the near future. It's to the point of numbness!
It's been awhile since I've seen a really good new movie... The way many of the movies are made now, they are somewhat abstract and complex in their plots.
LOL! What ever happened to the good old days when there were only a dozen (or less) movies released a year at the local theatre and we only had a half dozen channels to choose from!
If there wasn't anything on, there were always other things to do!
It was a special treat to go the movie theatre for a $.50 cents... once or twice a year or go bowling for a quarter a game..
Then of course there was always Disney on NBC on Sunday Evenings..and Bonanza.. Saturday morning cartoons are a fond memory too!
Sometimes less is more! Right now it seems that 'More' is actually 'less!'<br><br>Post edited by: KPW1956, at: 2007/11/06 15:00

I watch ABC Soaps but the only newtwork show I watch on a regular basis in Desperate Housewives. Oh, I watch Lost too but that isn't scheduled to come back until February. It's been years since I actually saw a movie on a movie theater too!
I'm not sure what they will do with the soaps. I can't even remember what happedn in 1988. I know I watched the soaps then too. Maybe they had enough to run from when the Olie North hearings took the soaps off the air.
I don't think the writers realize how little impact this strike is actually going to have on the typical TV watcher!

Tara... I just got to thinking about your last statement and think you are probably right on. I was just thinking about how most people will likely deal with it.. Now that many people have dozens and dozens of channels..shelves and shelves of dvd's... and I know my kids (all whom are adult now) love to buy the previous season DVD sets out and rewatch older shows from previous seasons.. Who knows? maybe some people might even pick up a book for a change. But there is absolutely no shortage of stuff to watch that are not dependent on professional writers and as I mentioned a ton of DVD's from popular shows. Not to mention Netflix and Red Box.. (Red Box is a vending rental machine in my area that I can rent dvd's for $1 a night!) They may be the one's who might really capitalize on the strike!<br><br>Post edited by: KPW1956, at: 2007/11/06 18:18

I usually watch 2-3 new movies per week. Some I rent and some I get on HBO. I know that sounds like a lot. Some of them are so bad that I can't get through them. I watch for 15-20 minutes and decide it just isn't worth my time. It's amazing how many bad movies are being made, even with really good actors. It's very surprising and quite disappointing. I mean certainly these actors don't need the money so bad that they would appear in a horribly written and directed movie. I don't get it.
However, there are some really good movies too. If you get the chance rent the movies called Evening. It is star packed and a great movie. I warn you it is a tear jerker. It is based on a book that was a big seller.
I like the independent movies the best. They are quite original and aren't so predictable.
