Just to tag on here...and keeping in mind that I did not see the show in question... I heard that clogging and square dancing in this country evolved from Irish step dancing and Scottish "reels."
Back in the old , old days, if you owned shoes at all, they were likely to be wooden "clogs!" In England they have what they call Morris dancing also. I think that all the folk dances probably started as a form of "self entertainment" get togethers...and you just happened to be wearing clogs!!
You can also hear the Scots/Irish influence in country music...the traditional kind...lots of fiddles and "plaintive" notes...songs about ordinary life...
Traditional dance in Scotland is referred to as "Scottish country dancing"...although soft leather "pumps" are used, instead of clogs.
"Riverdance" sort of updated step dancing...a lot of Spanish influence in there too, I thought, both in attitude and clothing, especially the mens'. In Ireland there is what they call the "black Irish" ...descendants of shipwrecked Spaniards, so the story goes...black referring to darker hair.
To my "ear", country music and dance here have all the above influences, as well as a little French thrown in for good measure...and it's very popular in Scotland and Ireland. They say that music is a universal language, and I personally believe that our "roots' play a big part in what "appeals" to us. I really do think it's genetic!!!!
