Coincidences? 1 Year, 6 Months ago

Recently I posted a message about the oddity of Anna Nicole Smith's death on the heels of her son's bizarre death. I said that law enforcement investigators often say there are no coincidences...well, I had this odd thing happen last week that took me aback. It's not anything big...but, it just made me wonder, why coincidences happen. What's your take on it and have you had anything similar happen to you?
Last week I went to a court hearing for a client and when I arrived a little early I began chatting with one of the lawyers on the other side. (There are 3 lawyers involved in the case) He said he had just locked his keys in his car and that his file and brief case were in there too. I said no way, because I had just almost locked my keys in my car. (We were parked in the same parking lot). I got out of my car and shut the door and thought the keys were inside. I panicked and threw my purse open and began franitically looking for my car keys and then discoved they were indeed in my purse, but, it was a close call.
As we continued chatting, the third attorney arrived. She apoligized for being late, but, had accidently locked herself out of her office and had to call someone to come and let her in to get her file for that case! I couldn't believe it. What are the odds of this happening? None of us have any brain disorder that I am aware of. One of us is in his 30's, and the other 2 in their 40's.
I forgot to tell you the kicker. We were there on a compentency hearing. Go figure.

Post edited by: Debby, at: 2007/04/09 12:09

Maybe this set of coincidences was needed for all of you to have a good laugh... I'm sure all of you got a chuckle out of the irony...
A competency hearing??? that is funny!
Maybe it was to make a point that sometimes all of us are struck by circumstances that make us feel like incompetent boobs!
If I had a nickle for every panic moment I've ever had with regard to locking my keys in the car... I think I have only actually done it a half dozen times in the last 10-15 years..
In the last 3-4 months, my husband and I both have!
I tell ya, joining an autoclub..like AAA or Allstate motor club will pay for itself with one distress call or breakdown! It's come to my rescue several times through the years... whether it was a mechanical in nature or absentmindedness!
I like to blame menapause right now!
I think those automatic locks are both a blessing and a curse! Sometimes I automatically hit the button on my way out.. and if you are multitasking as we often tend to do... it's hard to remember to double check for the actual keys..
I like the commecials for that Onstar service! I think the next time I get a new car... I might look into that! Last time I got locked out, it took AAA about an hour to come to the rescue..

You're right about AAA. They have helped me with flat tires and even tried to send a truck to pick me up when I got stranded in an ice storm.
The attorneys did get a good laugh. We came to a temporary agreement until the next hearing. The thing about a scare like that is that it makes you EXTRA careful for the next few months.

May I share my own bizarro coincidence from over 25 years ago?
When engaged to my husband, I needed my birth certificate to obtain our marriage license. My mother directed me to where she kept the envelope which held the bc's of my siblings and myself. I came from a blended family. My father divorced his first wife and took custody of 2 young children.. (my half brother and half sister)...My mother had a young daughter.. another half sister. I was the result of their union a year into their marriage.. My dad's first wife was from the Baltimore area.. I knew her given name but not her maiden name.. Her brother's last name was Hartford.. or something like that and I would have expected to see that listed on my siblings bc's. When I retrieved the BC's... I was shocked to see the maiden name listed for her was the same as my husband's last name! My husband's family was from Pa. and it wasn't an uncommon name there but it is here in my immediate area with only 2 or 3 others listed in the white pages. . My own maiden name is also not common in this area.. with the whole of the D.C. area also showing only 2 or 3 of that version and spelling... My brother and sister's bc's reflected the same names any of our future children would have.. except of course for first names. In Va. it's normal to give mother's maiden name.. and father's name..
You could have picked up my jaw from the floor when I saw this name on their bc's. Neither of them mentioned it or my father! It was an extremely wierd coincidence..
My maiden name is Scottish/English.. and my husband's name is German...

I have a coincidence for you...
My in-laws and my parents. My father and my father-in-law has the same birthday. My mother and mother-in-law goes by the same name. It wasn't until I was doing our genealogy that she admited that she went by her middle name, I found out that her first name was the same as my mother's sister. (My mother-in-law was an only child and my mother has only 1 sister. The names were not common and they were not from the same area).
I have an Aunt that was born on 4th of July.. and her first kid was born on Flag Day.
I do genealogy as a hobby.. there's a lot of coincidences that occur.

Slightly off topic... Years, years ago I locked myself out of my car... more than once... on two occasions the motor was running... my mind was somewhere else... LOL. A friend told me to keep a spare car key in my wallet because women never lock their purse in the car! It's true... never had that problem again... also suggested same to dh and on occasion he locked himself out, but carries a spare key in his wallet.
