It's Official: NBC Cancels Passions
Cancellation rumors have loomed over NBC's Passions for the past few years, but this time it's for real, suds fans.

The sad news was privately broken to the supernatural soap's cast and crew in L.A. yesterday. Reporters got official confirmation from NBC Entertainment president Kevin Reilly today at the Television Critics Association press tour in Pasadena, Calif.

"Passions will go," Reilly said. "Right now, we contractually have the show through June. We are talking to the producers and the cast about extending it for a couple more months to close the gap through August."

Come fall, Passions will go off NBC's airwaves to make room for a fourth hour of Today. Yeah, you read that right — a fourth hour. Why don't they just call the damn show All Day?! Sorry, I digress....

Reilly chalked up NBC's decision to the fact that daytime soap operas simply aren't as profitable as they once were. "The daypart has just gotten extremely tough financially," he said. "You know, it was a moneymaker for us for so long, and now the margins are just brutal and that's all the way around. That's not unique to NBC. And unfortunately, we do need to make money on these, and we certainly can't lose money.... The economics just mandate that we do this."

Reilly acknowledged that "Days of our Lives will be here [on NBC] until '09," per the Peacock network's deal with the show. His use of until made it quite clear that Days is unlikely to continue on NBC after 2009.

But let's not worry about Days just yet! The silver lining here is that Passions may not be completely doomed. Industry gossip has indicated that Passions could possibly end up on a cabler like SOAPnet or even become an Internet-only sudser. Reilly's comments offered us real hope that this is more than just wishful thinking.

"We are going to be looking very, very seriously at keeping [Passions] alive," the exec insisted. "The fact is, there are loyal viewers of this show who love it and show up every day. And in a perfect world, we'd like to keep the brand alive. There may be another network. You know, I don't think it's a broadcast network, but there may be another cable network that wants to get in business with us and have some sort of on-air presence for the show. We're certainly looking at online options. That audience is very, very faithful in the online world, and it's not inconceivable that we could see a daily episode of Passions online. And I think it would really succeed and draw advertisers."

Veteran soap scribe James E. Reilly introduced his wacky, tacky, hilariously un-PC Passions on July 5, 1999. Say what you will about this show's mad menagerie of witches, talking dolls and half-naked hotties, but these past eight years have been a helluva ride.

FYI, there's still lots more freaky fun happening in Harmony in the coming months, and TVGuide.com's resident suds addict will be there to cover it all, rest assured!
