TOPIC: Politics Anyone?

Re:Politics Anyone? 1 Year, 11 Months ago Karma: 1
I agree in part with KPW. I need a break on this board from politics if possible. I believe very strongly that we must speak out in what we believe and be as active politically as we can....and I do. I am VERY political. One of my colleagues in my office is the campaign manager for 4 or 5 local and statewide judicial canidates. Signs and phamplets are everywhere around our office during this very critical time and there are meetings almost daily.

My other colleague is helping another judicial canidate and she herself has put her name in the hat for an appointment for a new judical position. I have 3 other friends who are running for office in one capacity or the other. I help with phone callings, mailings, signs, and donations and have for years. We have helped get some good people elected. We have lost some too.

One of my best friends has been a lobbiest with the NC General Assembly for the last 8 years and we almost always talk politics. Ninety percent of my friends and social circle are HIGHLY political. So it nice to for me to take a break from it here. If others wish to debate here, that's fine. I don't think I will join in.

I used to talk about politics any old time and once with my brother I got into a hot debate on Thanksgiving Day. We were both very serious about our feelings. I resented his strong positions because he didn't have any facts to support his views and had never even read anything about the topic we were discussing. I thought he might have been interested in the facts I had discovered...but he wasn't. He was angry at me and didn't believe what I told him. The Thanksgiving meal was very chilly to say the least.

I then decided to keep my mouth shut and not bring up politics in my parents home anymore. They will never see things from my perspective and I know it. Although, I think my family respects my profession and education, they think I am a looney tune on politics and I see them as narrow minded and uninformed. I would be willing to listen to their opinion, but, they can't listen to mine because their politics and religion are tied up together some how. Any progess on this is not likely.

I hope this explains why I chose not to go there here on this board. It does not mean that I am not worried about the world as we know it....I AM. I will do as I always do and work very hard on all the national elections and local to support the canidate that I believe in.

I know I enjoy discussing politics and current events, since I come from a family that was involved in politics on the local level and state level in the state I live in. I do enjoy talking about politics and current issues and all.

How diappointing to learn that women on this board see no reason to discuss poolitics, the war and the upcoming elections. Political debate can be approached in an adult manner. There seems to be no taboo to discussing religion here???

The fact is, like it or not, if Americans refuse to discuss and learn about the issues that we are facing today....our future will be bleak. Like it our not, the upcoming elections, the candidates and the issues will form the future of our country, ourselves and our children and grandchildren.

Political discussion is the most important discussion that we can have at this time. Yes, at times, if we take things too personally, it can become uncomfortable....so what???? To not speak about this is even worse than being uncomfortable. The US is in big trouble...I care....I am stunned that no one else on this board cares.

Speaking with only those that we are assured will agree with us is not the answer, debate and discussion is healthy.

Lauren,

Wouldn't it be nice if that could be the one subject we could escape from here on the boards? I mean the political campaigns and advertising on tv have reached new lows as far as I'm concerned..

I do try to vote as an independent... There are things I like about each parties positions. I wish we could be totally bypartisan..

This board has so few regular posters and for me I'd just as soon keep conversations light and meaningful as much as possible. As I said earlier politics (and religion) can be very devisive..

Seeing how you reply to others at times and getting a sense of your basic temperament would make me wary of trying to enter into any meaningful debate with you.

More often than not you come across as an angry person. Just my perception and mho.

The political issues and considerations for many of us are different as this isn't a national election... But local and state elections going on. How can we have meaningful debates on those local and state issues. Most of us already have a made up mind in the national arena... and most likely in the local issues and elections as well.

Maybe you are looking for another arena to vent and not debate. I'm sure there are many forums already set up to do either or... (venting or debating!).

Personally, I'd rather not see this forum go that direction... It's nice having a respite from the daily barrage on tv, radio and news..

I have no problem if this is a topic that you choose not to particpate in, KPW. But I do object to your bahing me personally for even presenting it as a topic.

Frankly, I am not at all interested in your attempts to read my mind. Frankly, you do not know me at all. I take objection to the fact that while "feigning meakness" you find it neccessary to make personal attacks. Lucky for me, I do not own your assumptions.

I am well aware that there are very few posters and postings.....I was hoping that a topic of current interest might get more people involved. It is obvious that many members are no longer interested in rehashing SO.

By the way....I do not want to "Escape" those things that really matter.......

I wouldn't have 'bahed' you, had you not bahed the community here for not cowtowing to your challenge. Basically you said we didn't care about the issues because we choose not to debate them...

You don't know me either or the others on this board... So you don't know whether we care or not about the issues. Many of us just choose not to debate them.

For you and whoever else enjoys passing the time that way... Go to it! That's what's so great about this country! I tried to suggest that if you weren't getting your needs for debates here filled that there were other places where you probably could.

I live just outside the Nation's capital.. Believe me, I get my fill of politics! The nations, D.C., Maryland and Virginia!

Wow! Talk about angry!! EEE Gads! KPW! This is just another topic on a message board....NO One including me has forced you, nor called you by name to join in a discussion. No one! You chose to post and BASH......

Who cares where you live? I l have lived in every geographical area of the US at one time or another, including Georgetown. What difference does it make? Living near the capital does not make the issues any more or less closer to you. We are all Americans, government affects all of us. I am passionate about what is going on in our nation. I enjoy discussing the issues.

Get over yourself and move on to discussing the former housemates......this is your obviouse passion.
