New blog entry 2 Years, 3 Months ago Karma: 1
Happened to check her blog at her myspace acct. Has 2 new blog entries... and the latest one I think concerns an article she wrote for the July/August issue of Obesity Help Magazine. Not sure if you can get this at the bookstore or not... There is a website but I think the site hasn't been updated with the July/August issue yet. What she shows in the blog entry might be the text of the article. It chronicles even more clearly her past and her path to where she is now.. I thought it an interesting read... Even if it isn't what got publishd in the 'OH' magazine.

Here's a link...

(Wow..is that long, or what? If it doesn't work you can probably get to her myspace blog through another recent post..)

Read the blog...the thing that stood out the most is that thoughtless remarks to your children can be so damaging. To tell a girl that being thin and beautiful is something to strive for,
is so shallow, IMO. To judge a person's worth on their physical appearance, especially your own child, is in my opinon, abusive.
Bad enough in the schoolyard, but, at home?
The article sounded good, but honestly...I think Christie is still overly concerned with appearance...or at least she was while in the SOH. IMO.

I think that the world in general has a negative and misguided opinion of gastric bypass surgery. It's hard to describe the negativity, but it seems as if many think the surgery is a short cut or lazy way out. This tells me that they are misinformed. The surgery is a drastic medical intervention for someone who is facing a certain death from complications of obesity. (No, I haven't had it, but, I think I would consider it, if I were obese) I think it's sad for these people to be forced to defend themselves as if they committed some crime. There is a misconception that it is a easy way out of obesity. I don't believe people would react the same way if there were a surgery that would cure alcoholism.

I think Rhonda had a negative attitude about the surgery as well. IMO she demonstrated that with Sommer and Christie. I think she also minimized the need for plastic surgery to remove flabby skin after major weight loss. I realize she was trying to get them to examine their insides as opposed to outside, but, from the way she acted, I wondered, what kind of things did she think plastic surgery was appropiate for? Should it be reserved only for burn victims or those with major deformaties? Don't get me wrong, I adore Rhonda, but, I'm touchy on this topic. I know 2 family friends who had the bypass and it saved and changed their life in a huge way.

I thought the surgery was a quick fix but after watching Sommer and Christie and reading about them it was what they both needed.

Debby, I agree with you re the surgery. People should not have to defend their decision. It's a very serious and potentially life threatening step , and I admire the courage it must take.
I think some may not realize that the surgery is only an aid to losing weight, and that great adjustments and efforts follow. I
remember Christie being told that 60% will regain the weight...she was really shocked to hear that, so her pre op info may not have been the best. If I had the botched arm surgery, I would certainly want it corrected. Did she sue, if you know?
My concern for Christie was that she seemed to believe that, if she lost the weight she would attain happiness. I can remember feeling that way, years ago...lost weight, still had the same problems...nothing magical happened as a result!
My hope for Christie is that the old "head tape" stops playing, and that she can discover that self worth has little to do with what the scale says. Having said that, those "messages" are, unfortunately all around, in every magazine, and in the attitudes of many in our society. A pity. IMO.
