Hi Miss Grizz!

Just read about where the name Elphaba came from.

(Not in the book. Online.)

McGuire too the name of the author of the Oz books, L Frank Baum, L F B -EL FA BA, Elphaba.

( I always wonder where authors get some of these names from so I went to look around and see.)

I have about 25 more pages in Gilliken to read.

One thing that is making me a little crazy is that everyone seems to go on about Elphaba being green, yet no one thinks anything about the Munchkins diminutive stature, or of Animals who are humanized. But, for some reason this green girl is just so so awful.

What do you think of Miss Morrible the Horrible? I can honestly say whenever the author writes about her he makes her seem creepy/repulsiv/evil without really having her do anything overtly bad.

Oh Luna........I feel what you mean about Morrible......she really bleeds through the pages as horrible, doesn't she?? And that little tikety robot thing she has too!!

I finished Gilliken................wow!! It does seem each part ends abruptly and leaves quite a bit to the imagination!!! Let me know when you're done with Gilliken and we'll talk more about that.

Thanks for the info on Elphaba's name....very interesting!! I hadn't thought about the author's name being involved!!!

I have the book with the photos from the broadway play in the center...do you??

Gotta try to get some sleep now!!! Later!!

Finished Gilliken. Finished City of Emeralds. Am now entering In the Vincus. (I have the other version of the book. The illustrations are very interesting. Like woodcuts. In Vincus, you see a tiny little witchy and another small person walking up to the huge wooden doors of a fortress. I guess that Elphaba has taken to wearing her little witch hat at last.)

That Morrible - ugh. She is disgusting. (I think that when Galinda's Ama is stricken with the very illness that the girl had made up - obviously this was Morrible's doing - and very telling of her true nature. Evil.)

Galinda/Glinda - well - it is interesting to she her is an entirely different light.

Our poor little Greenie - I feel so badly for her. And, what do you think of Nessarose?

On that note - do you have any idea why BOTH sisters are 'different'? (Should I not say why incase others have not gotten that far yet?)

Also, regarding that whole 'sexual content' note - I am wondering why authors' who decide to 'retell' a children's fairy tale always seem to put a sexual slant that is not exactly what would be considered mainstream sex. Why the need to have the sexual situations be so debasing? (The Beauty trilogy written by Anne Rice, under her other name is a perfect example.)

Also, I do like the way the Gale Forcers are described. They are almost Nazi-like. Doing the dirty work for a little man who hides behind his smoke and mirrors.

And, on a completely unrelated note - I am wondering if there will be little flying monkeys in the storyline. I am awaiting their introduction.

Oh Luna,

I'm about halfway thru Vinkus. Very interesting there, let me tell ya!! I think we see the beginning of the monkeys answered also!!!!

Yes, I also thought Morrible struck the Ama with that exact disease and that doing that would also keep Glinda in the guilt/suspicion/easy to manipulate mode by Morrible!!

Yeah, Glinda coming from privilege and being pretty "casts" her as *good*.

Elphaba, coming from poverty and abuse "casts" her as *evil*. Very interesting slants on that.

I was thinking both the sisters were born "flawed" because of the odd hypocrisy of their parents. And though I haven't yet "met" the younger brother, named Shell, my early thought is that if he is "normal" then it may well be that TurtleHeart fathered him!

I am frustrated with gratuitous sexual stories thrown in. They are not necessary at ALL to the context, story or plot. And I saw an article in my Family Fun magazine that "WICKED" (the Broadway musical) is touring and recommended for audiences aged 8 and over. This tells me they took out that sexual content in the book and the story still flowed so well it's a smash hit!!!!!

Okay............back to finish Vinkus!!!! It's something!!!! But be prepared for more "gratuitous" shhhtufff!!!!!

Your theory about the girls/parents and Shell's/parents is very interesting. I am curious if we will ever meet Shell - or if he is going to appear in the sequel Son of a Witch. (Yes, that is really the name of the sequel!)

And, as far as that gatuitous sex - you bet! Enough already. What is the point of it? I think without doubt we already very much 'get' that the Land of Oz is strange!

OH!!! Before I forget - I think that the 'hermit' that lives in the caves near Sarima's fortress is her husband/Elphaba's lover, Fiyero.

I have a question about Morrible - do you think she really is a Fish and is passing as a human?

Grizz - I think we are the only two discussing this book. But! I am not complaining. I am enjoying my contact with you about the loonies of Oz.
