The Lord's sheep entrusted to my care often look to me for care & relief in the midst of their sufferings. "Why Pastor? Why do I have to suffer this way? How can I find comfort?" It is a question we all ask in difficult & troubling times, including today as we remember the attack on America that occurred three years ago. 1Peter 1:3-9 is a favorite section of mine & has often brought comfort to the faithful.

Being refined by fire is not a pleasant experience. I don't know anyone who enjoys the burning, yet God tells us f our trials, "These have come so that your faith-of greater worth than gold...may be prved genuine & may result in praise, glory & honor when Jesus Christ is revealed."

Make no mistake! God is not the author of evil. Suffering is a result of sin, & sin is not of God. God wills His children to draw closer to Him, even in times of anguish, so that He may show them His boundless compassion & strengthen their faith as He comes to them in His word & Sacraments. The comforting result is an inexpressible & glorious joy as we are receiving the salvation of our souls.

Be with us in suffering & in anxiety, that by Your mercy we may bring praise & glory & honor to Your name for the gift of our Savior, Jesus. Amen
