Sue, Glad it went so very well.. Working as a volunteer for a program already in place will be a good opportunity to learn the ins and outs and the behind the scenes issues..
You might also look and see if your area has a big sister program. That way you might be able to mentor one person.. But you could always do that outside of an organized program. Maybe a child in the neighborhood or a local school or church could match you up with someone. Maybe a young teen who is struggling with family issues. The local schools might have some tutoring opportunities too.
You seem to have a heart for these situations. Your own experiences will provide you with an extra measure of compassion and empathy... Every situation is unique though.. You might get some angry kids.. Getting some training to deal with the toughies might be good... or taking some psychology classes can't hurt! You might be able to get alot practical experience in dealing with all types of kids by working the volunteer program the judge mentioned!
Best of luck to you! The kids who come to have you in their path will be very blessed.
