Happened to see yahoo's headlines of things going on in the world..
Seems that she is lending support toward Michael Vick..the NFL quarterback who has pled guilty to felony (?) dogfight charges and being a ringleader. It has been stated that he is participated in the killing of some of the dogs some of which were hung or drowned..

Here is the yahoo article.. I didn't realize that the View was debuting today. I wonder how much flack Whoopie will get for supporting Vick.. It really shouldn't be an racial or cultural issue..

I don't think it should be something that should be shrugged off or defended.

OK. Read the article. Didn't see the show. My question. If he didn't realize how wrong dog fighting was why in the hell did he lie about it?
"Goldberg said that "from where he comes from" in the South, dogfighting isn't that unusual."
I agree with Joy Behar. It is breeding dogs to murder and kill other dogs. There is something wrong about that .
I missed today. I might try to catch a few minutes tomorrow.

Michael Vick is from Va.. I'm born and raised here.. Never seen a dogfight, don't know anyone who has ever been a part of it.. Not that they'd probably admit it though.

When the story first broke.. it was was said that Michael got involved in it while in college. So it isn't something he grew up with!

My son went to the same college he did and didn't get involved in that sort of thing.

What some people do for entertainment is sickening! They do it more for the money and the thrill... not culture..

Sorry to see that Whoopie's gotten started on such a controversial note. I don't know how anyone can find it ok..to bankroll an underground betting operation.. that involves training dogs to fight and then mistreat and kill the dogs that you don't find acceptable..
Drowning and hanging dogs that could be injured or don't perform acceptably is inhumane anyway you look at it!

Post edited by: KPW1956, at: 2007/09/04 23:03

I've lived in poor areas here in the south and you usually see street dog fighting (at least the set up of it)... where one person walks his dog then sees another, egos swells, and they make plans to meet in an abandoned house. We had a neighbor that use to feed gunpowder to her dog to make it mean (common practice with street fighters)- we would call the humane society and unless they see the gunpowder in the food nothing can be done. Professional dog fighting is a little different... haven't seen anything like it around but my husband has heard of it from co-workers. It's like the difference between school yard fights and boxing, one is done for ego/ anger and the other is done for the purse and bets. Down in this area... they will put 2 praying manta together and bet on the outcome.

I think as far as "cultural" it's more of pockets here and there and not the south in general that support and practice the so called sport ( I think it's evil personally). Sometimes their grandfathers did it, their father does it, uncles, cousins... it's acceptable in the family and acceptable in the circle of friends they were raised with - not the neighborhood/ city they live in. They are raised that dogs don't feel pain like people do or even that certain dogs likes a good fight.

As far as Vick's lying... smoking weed is illegal and most of those that smoke it will deny it when asked. They might know it's illegal but disagrees about it being wrong.

I think Whoopie was offering a different perspective on Vick instead of seeing him as just an evil monster. She did say she does not condone dog fighting and hopes it gets the message out that dog fighting is not acceptable in the USA. Media and journalist seems to love to take tidbits of the bigger conversation and paint a bad picture.... She's an animal lover.

Post edited by: TigerRose, at: 2007/09/05 11:08

Barbara announced today that they are filling the empty chair on the panel beginning next Monday. But I didn't catch who... I hope it's Sherry...but I don't know if Barbara even said who... I think she just put it out there as a tease and also to change the subject from Whoopie.. who was making comments about having 'stepped in it' yesterday.. (I think she meant doo doo..) She clarified.. and in no way did she mean to be condoning the dog fighting culture.
